How to Save Money on Gas

  • NM_124_and_US_66_WB_near_Budville_NM

Expenses can really add up when you’re traveling. If you’re traveling by car, or getting a rental car at your destination, gas expenses can become an issue for your budget. Here are ways to cut down on the amount of money you spend on gas as you travel:

  1. Fill up the tank at a local station before heading out. You know where the best prices are in your area so take advantage of that. It may not be as easy to find good deals once you’re on the road.
  2. Travel lightly. If you’ve been keeping heavy cargo in your trunk, empty it out before you leave. If you lower the overall weight of your vehicle, you won’t need as much fuel.
  3. When exiting the highway to find a gas station, choose an exit that has several different options. You can see which exit has the most options by looking at the amenity signs along the highway that list fast food, hotel and gas station info for a particular exit. If you pick an exit with multiple stations, you’ll likely get better prices because of the competition between them. There will usually also be a sign near the exit that indicates how far away each station is. You may want to check out the one that is furthest from the exit to get the one that isn’t price-gouging outsiders.
  4. If you’re renting a car, find a gas station that isn’t quite so close to the rental company. Gas stations in the vicinity will likely have higher prices because so many people need to fill up before returning their cars. Make sure to do your research when you first pick up your car so you don’t have to worry about it when you’re returning the car and are pressed for time. You can check out gas prices online at sites like GasBuddy or with a mobile app.
  5. While on the road, you can save gas by using your cruise control on long stretches of road to prevent you from speeding up and using more fuel. You should also take care to slow down into a stop rather than slamming the brakes as this can waste fuel as well.
  6. You can also save gas by parking in the first open spot you come across rather than hunting for the closest spot to the entrance. You may have to do a little more walking, but studies show that you’ll actually reach the entrance sooner than if you searched for a closer spot.
  7. When filling up, choose the lowest grade of fuel that you need. If your car doesn’t require premium grade fuel, then stick to regular fuel to cut down your bill. You can find out what type of fuel is required by checking your owner’s manual.
