Packing Tips for Active Travel
Don’t just bring jeans
Packing jeans may seem like a good idea for the outdoors, but they can get wet and become heavy. Instead, try to bring pants that are waterproof and/or windproof. For more versatility, you can find pants that can convert to shorts, and, if you need extra layering in colder weather, bring tights or long underwear.
Prepare for sweat
Synthetic fabrics absorb sweat better than cotton so look for more breathable options when packing shirts and hoodies.
Bring a few pairs of shoes
Depending on the activities you have planned, you may want to bring a few types of shoes. Shoes or boots that are lightweight may be best for hiking, but for rocky trails you might need a sturdier option. And if you plan to go kayaking or rafting, water shoes might be a good idea.
Don’t forget accessories
Items such as hats, scarves or gloves are necessities for certain situations. Think of what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be going and make sure to pack any accessories that you might want along the way.
Bring the right tools
Not having the right supplies when the situation demands can make for a rough experience. If you’re likely to be surrounded by bugs, make sure to pack insect repellant as well as anti-itch cream. If you’re planning to hike at night, make sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight with plenty of batteries. In just about all situations, make sure to have a reusable water bottle to fend off dehydration.
