What to Do in Case of Inclement Weather
Because there is always the possibility of changes in the weather, it makes sense to have an idea of what you’d like to do in the event of extreme weather. Going to the movies, visiting the library or simply dressing for the weather and going about your day as planned are all viable options. Knowing what you would like to do ahead of time can take some of the sting out of bad weather and allow you options if the skies should darken.
The good news is that St. George offers excellent year-round weather. Located in the northernmost portion of the Mojave Desert, St. George sees more than 300 days of sunshine per year! The clear sunny skies, hot summers and proportionally mild winter make for a comfortable climate all year round. With average annual high temperatures of 77 degrees and average lows of just 51 degrees with a dry climate, St. George’s weather patterns afford residents and visitors alike plenty of opportunity to enjoy the pleasant weather during all kinds of outdoor activities.
More so than rain, the prospect of pleasant but extreme heat poses a risk to your outdoor adventures. It is important to know and understand your level of fitness and to not exert yourself beyond your capabilities. Try to make time for a swim or find a spot in the shade during the hottest part of the day, and be sure to always stay hydrated and carry water with you when outdoors. A wide brimmed hat, sunscreen and planning activities early in the morning and/or later in the evening will help minimize the impact of the sun’s warmth on your stay in St. George.
In the event of rain, it should be noted that most storms are passing and that skies will soon clear. It becomes especially important to be on the lookout for lightning during this time, and to exercise caution around bodies of water. Slot canyons should be strictly avoided in the event of even a small amount of rain in the forecast.
Aside from its plethora of nearby outdoor activities, St. George offers many indoor alternatives as well. Going to a movie, the pool or gym at Clarion Suites, or exploring one of many fine dining opportunities will give you an idea of where to spend your time if the weather is less than ideal.
Don’t be put off by the prospect of bad weather because St. George boasts an excellent climate all year long. Should you find yourself dealing with some unfortunate weather conditions during your stay, keep in mind that there are a lot of alternatives to outdoor adventures. Part of the adventure of vacation is making the best of the unknown, so a good attitude, preparedness and a little ingenuity will go a long way to making your St. George vacation the best it can be.
