6 Tips for Traveling Safely

Getting out of your normal surroundings and traveling can be a great experience but it also has its risks. Letting your guard down in an unfamiliar place can lead to lost or stolen possessions and even injury, but with some simple precautionary tactics you can avoid the dangers and just enjoy your trip.

1. Always look back

Often when you are traveling, you are carrying a lot more things around with you than you usually do at home. It can be very easy to lose track of your items, leaving them at restaurants, in cabs, or in your hotel room when you check out. The simplest way to avoid leaving items behind and losing them is to take a backwards glance every time you leave a certain location. Looking back and double checking the area you were sitting in can reassure you that you aren’t leaving any valuables behind.

2. Be smart with money sources

It’s very common for people to keep all of their bank cards in one place, usually in a wallet or purse, but this isn’t the safest option when traveling. While away from home, try to keep at least one of your cards away from the rest in a safe place preferably in your hotel room where it can’t be stolen off of you. This way, if you lose your wallet or it gets taken from you, you aren’t completely helpless. You won’t be in desperate need to replace all your cards while on the road, which can be difficult.

3. Be careful where you put your wallet

Putting your wallet in your back pocket makes you an easy target for pickpocketing. Instead, try to keep your money in a more secure place such as a front pocket of your pants or an inside pocket of your jacket. You can also invest in a money belt.

4. Do your research

Traveling is a good time to break out of your routine and experience new things, but if you’re planning an activity that is potentially risky or requires proper training, you’ll want to make sure you do your research. Before booking, make sure that the company you’re booking with is legitimately qualified and has a good track record. Don’t just go with whoever offers the cheapest rate because there may be hidden dangers behind their low price tag.

5. Take nothing for granted

Don’t just assume that the people around you are trustworthy and your belongings won’t be taken. Most people know not to leave their things unattended but they will leave bags by their feet at a cafe which makes them easy bait for someone to grab and run. Be extra protective of your bags by holding them in your lap or wrapping a strap around your leg.

6. Don’t mess with muggers

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being mugged, it’s better to give up your wallet than to fight and get injured. If you have insurance and you leave your valuables at home, the results of a mugging shouldn’t be too damaging, whereas challenging a mugger can lead to severe bodily harm.
